3rd period discussion day 4.10.14

Post 4 questions from Chapter 6 section 1-2 here.

  1. Section 1
    1. What is a poll tax ?
    2. Do you agree with the fact that any US citizen that is at least the age of 18 can vote legally? Do you think there should be some type of qualification like a test of some sort that voters should talked and pass in order to be able to vote? Why or why not?

    Section 2
    1. Do you think that the voting age should be changed to 17? Why or why not?
    2. What are the pros and cons of voter registration? Do you think the Motor Voter Law has had a positive or negative impact on voting?
    *allows people to register when applying for or renewing driver's license

  2. 1. Should there be more qualifications voters must meet, similar to how it was when our country started? why or why not?
    2.Should people that have committed crimes have the right to vote after being released from prison?
    3. Should there be some sort of literacy test one must pass before being able to vote?
    4. Is registering to vote really necessary, or should we just allow all 18 year old citizens to be able to vote without the long process of registering?

    2. How has suffrage evolved over America’s history?

    1. Why do some states have different residence requirements?
    2. Should the voting age be 21?

  4. Chapter 6
    Section 1:
    1. Should the electorate be expanded? If so, why and to what extent.
    2. Do you think it gives the individual states too much power to set there own voting qualifications (under restrictions)? Could this effect an election?
    Section 2:
    1. Do you think the qualifications are too strict in order to vote? should they be loosened or more strict? why or why not?
    2.Should literacy play more of a major role in the qualification for one to vote?

  5. 1.) how do you determine legitimate votes from non legitimate votes without taking the right to vote?
    2.) what does fraudulent voting do to our registration or just voting?
    3.) expanding the electorate, what would voting be like without expanding it?
    4.) what would it be like if our voting rights act and civil rights act did not come till later than the 50s and 60s?

  6. 1) Is Congress allowed to remove amendments that disfranchise Americans based on race?
    2) Why aren't the 15th and 19th Amendments added to the Bill of Rights?
    3) Why are immigrants referred to as "aliens"?
    4) If a convicted felon is released during the year of an election, will they be able to vote?

    2. Do you think us teenagers would really have an impact on the election if we should vote?
    Section 2
    1. Why are people from other countries labeled as Aliens?
    2. Is it right for a criminal to be able to vote and not someone else from another country?
