6th period Ted Talk

Economist George Ayittey sees Africa's future as a fight between Hippos -- complacent, greedy bureaucrats wallowing in the muck -- and Cheetahs, the fast-moving, entrepreneurial leaders and citizens who will rebuild Africa.

  1. Questions:what did they do instead of going to the people? why does Africa have chiefs and how do they get appointed?
    Facts: they have hope for their government. and without the council the chief can't pass a law.
    Interesting things: the richest people are heads of state in Africa. and Africans hate government and tyranny.

    2 Questions:
    1) Why can we name no more than 15 African Leaders?
    2) Who do we want to help more in Africa? The Government or the people of Africa?

    2 Facts:
    1) People are trying to help Africa that have no idea what they are doing.
    2) Government is one of he too problems in Africa.

    2 Interesting Things:
    1) He compares different types of people associated with the government to animals. (Ex: a cheetah)
    2) People of Africa spend 20 billion dollars a year to import food.

    1.why don't the orginaziations and such help the African people?
    2.why does Africa keep putting money in this "Bowl that leaks" and can they fix the "leaky bowl"?

    1. That there are formal and informal sectors.
    2.How much Africa actually imports from other countries.
    Interesting facts.
    1.The amount of corruption and poverty there actually is in Africa.
    2. There are different sectors in Africa and how they are separated.

    1. Why does Africa have so many failing leaders? How can they resolve this issue?
    2. Why does Africa want diasporadic to donate to them?

    1. Traditional Africans hate government and separate government into tribes.
    2. If you look back in African history when a group of people didn't like the chief they would get a new one.
    Facts:
    1.cheetah generation is the group of Africans moong toward democracy

    2. What is Africa's main problem?

    1. The 3 Economy Sectors

    -informal
    -modern
    2. Ancient gov. ran off on the confederacy principle.

    1. He considered Africa as a vampire state because it was sucking the economy from the people.
    2. People could barely name 20 African leaders out of 204. It shows the African leaders have let their people down.

    learned 1) they have recently had over 200 leaders of state, but only a few can be remembered. 2) Leaders exported their earnings to foreign banks

    Interesting 1) tribes had democratic systems set up. 2) The speaker saw the cheetahs eventually overthrowing the hippos

    Questions 1) When will big changes occur? 2) why dont we ever hear about African events?

    1) Africa spends more than 138 billion a year
    2) 20 billion is spent on food itself
    1)African people could not name even 20 out of the 204 leaders that that did not fail his people.
    2) I found it interesting that the Africans consider their government as a Vampire State.
    1) How long was Africa a free market system?
    2) Why does foreign aid continue to go to Africa if even the people say the government does not use it to aid the people.
