Economist George Ayittey sees Africa's future as a fight between Hippos -- complacent, greedy bureaucrats wallowing in the muck -- and Cheetahs, the fast-moving, entrepreneurial leaders and citizens who will rebuild Africa.

  1. - The African government won't willingly reform the economy.
    - Africa is not utilized in their mineral resources. They have wealth but are not using it.

    - 40% of eh wealth created in Africa is taken out of Africa.
    - Every year Africa spends 20 billion to import food.

    - Why did the African leaders fail their people?

    FACTS:
    1) 40% of the wealth in Africa is taken out of Africa

    2) Africa spend 20 billion dollars to import food every year.

    INTERESTING:
    1) The African people there is two problems in Africa that is rats and the government

    2) He said "African isn't poor. its rich"

    3) A majority of African leaders have failed their people

    QUESTIONS:
    1) What exactly did he mean was a leaking bowl in Africa?

    2) Why don't the African people rebel or go against its own government if the people are being treated so bad?

  3. I learned that there is still a lot of corruption in Africa. I also learned that the people hate their leaders which suprises me because I thought they would've started a revolt.

    1.) who does Africa really need to lead them in Africa rather than the leaders they have now?
    2.)does the government truly help everyone or forget about some due to the struggles of deciding political leaders?
    Facts-
    1.) cheetah generation don't wait on the government strict reformers
    2.)corruption costs is 148 billion $
    Interesting things-
    1.) how Africa is rich in all these needed natural resources around the world but are still in poverty
    2.) 40% of the wealth come from outside of Africa

    If Africa has many natural resources why doesn't there economy flourish?

    Africa is rich in natural resources

    facts:
    1. 40% of the money in Africa is not spent in Africa.
    2. 204 leaders in Africa since 1960 and people could only name 15 good leaders out of 204.

  7. Corruption in Africa amounts to $148 billion dollars and they dont export any crops today. I wonder why the population hasn' t tried to overthrow the gov.t? Do they have the right to refuse to pay tax on informal business if their gov.t catches them?

    Learned:
    1. Africa is full of natural resources and minerals but they aren't being used correctly.
    2. Corruption cost 143 bil a year. Even simple things we take for granted like importing food cost 20 billion.
    Inspiring/interesting:
    1. Africa leaders are constantly failing them. He says African people would rather have tribes with chiefs so if the chief isn't doing something right they can just leave him.
    2. We have to understand where the African people are if we want to help them. Like the traditional, informal, and modern sections. We also have to understand what these sections do like the traditional does farming so what can we provide for them to make farming easier.
    Questions:
    1. Why does it cost so much to just import food
    2. How can we donate money but not send it through the government. Also what organizations can we trust.

    1. There is a resemblance of hardliners and softliners [Cheetahs & Hippos].
    2. Majority of leaders have failed.
